The Cheapest Photographer Is the Most Expensive Mistake: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Let's be honest: weddings are expensive, and wanting a good deal is completely reasonable. We're not going to pretend budgets don't exist.

But here's the thing. You can redo the centerpieces. You can return the shoes. You cannot redo your wedding. The photos and film are the only parts of the day built to last forever, and picking your team on price alone is how couples end up with blurry ceremony shots, missing family portraits and a "videographer" who forgot to switch on the microphone.

So before you sign anything with anyone (yes, including us), ask these ten questions.

1. Have you photographed weddings like ours?

A multi-day South Asian wedding with a 400-person reception is a completely different job from a 60-person garden party. Ask whether your photographer has covered your kind of ceremony, knows the rituals and has worked events your size. You want someone who knows the pheras are about to start before the pandit says so.

2. Can we see a full gallery, not just the highlights?

Anyone can post twenty amazing photos on Instagram. Ask to see one or two complete weddings from start to finish. That's how you find out whether they're consistent through the quiet parts, the dark parts and the chaotic parts.

3. Who exactly will be shooting our wedding?

The person on the consultation call isn't always the person who shows up. Ask who will be there, how many photographers and videographers you'll have and whether you can see their work specifically.

4. What's your backup plan?

Cameras fail. Memory cards fail. People get sick. A professional team has backup gear, cameras that record to two cards at once, a system for backing up your files after the event and a plan for what happens if someone can't make it.

5. How do you handle low light?

Reception halls are dark. Mehndi nights are often lit with fairy lights and good intentions. Ask to see work from dark, indoor events, because that's where you find out who really knows what they're doing.

6. What's included, and what costs extra?

Hours of coverage, number of shooters, albums, films, travel, overtime, rush editing. Get it all in writing, so there are no surprises when the final invoice shows up.

7. When will we get everything?

Ask about turnaround for sneak peeks, the full gallery and each film. A multi-day wedding can mean thousands of images and hours of footage, so timelines vary. What matters is that you know upfront.

8. How will we receive our files, and for how long?

Online gallery, downloads, USB, album? How long will the gallery stay online? Whatever the answer, download your files and back them up in more than one place the moment you get them. Future you will be grateful.

9. What's your editing style?

Light and airy, rich and moody, true to color? Make sure you love how your photographer edits, because that's how your whole wedding is going to look. We wrote a post about photo editing styles if you want to figure out which one is you.

10. Can we see the contract?

A real professional will have one, and it should cover payments, cancellations, rescheduling, delivery timelines and how your images can be used. Read it. Ask questions. No contract, no deal.

Red flags to watch for

  • No contract, or a very vague one

  • Can't (or won't) show you full galleries

  • Can't tell you who will actually be shooting your wedding

  • Pressure to book today because the "special price" expires tonight

  • "Unlimited everything" at a price that seems too good to be true (it usually is)
